What to Wear for Paquita Variations: A Guide for Dancers, Moms and Teachers
Paquita variations are refined, elegant classical ballet variations often chosen for competitions, exams, and advanced-level performances. Known for its clarity, musical precision, and regal quality, Paquita demands a costume that reflects pure classical style and impeccable proportions, as well as the traditional Spanish style.
This guide helps dancers, parents, and teachers choose the right Paquita costume and plan confidently for performances.
The right costume:
- Highlights clean classical technique and Spanish style
- Enhances posture, épaulement, and port de bras
- Meets competition and examination expectations
- Presents the dancer as polished and professional
Judges expect a traditional, uncluttered look that supports the dancer’s musicality and clarity.
Traditional Paquita Costume Style
A proper Paquita costume is a classical pancake tutu with a refined, symmetrical design. Key features include:
- Firm, flat pancake skirt with balanced construction
- Elegant bodice with classical V-shaped neckline
- Soft pastel or ivory tones, often accented with gold
- Delicate embellishments that enhance the Spanish style without overpowering
The overall effect should be noble, light, and timeless.

"THE AWAKENING OF FLORA"
Traditional Costume Style
The importance of choosing the right costume for each Variation!
There are fours principal roles in "The Awakening of Flora":
Flora, Goddess of Flowers/Spring
Diana, Goddess of the Moon
Aurora, Goddess of the Dawn
Hebe, Goddess of Youth
For each of these roles, a specific tutu should be worn.

The traditional costume for the Flora variation is a romantic-style tutu, not a short classical pancake tutu.
Key characteristics include:
- A romantic-length tutu skirt (typically falling below the knee or mid-calf)
- Soft layers of tulle and chiffon that move fluidly
- A fitted bodice with classical lines and secure support
- Delicate, nature-inspired embellishments such as red roses details, pearls, gold appliques, or light crystal accents
The overall look should feel light, lyrical, and poetic, reflecting the ballet’s pastoral and mythological origins.
Color Palette & Design Details
Traditional Flora costumes are known for their soft, luminous color palettes. Common choices include:
- Ivory or white with red roses appliques for the role of Flora
- Sky blue with moon shaped headpiece for the role of Diana, Goddess of the Moon
- Pale pink or blush for the role of Aurora, Goddess of the Dawn
- Soft gold or champagne tones and ivory for Hebe, the Goddess of Youth
- Subtle pastel accents
Design details should enhance the costume without overpowering the dancer. The focus remains on elegance and harmony rather than bold contrast.
Why Custom-Made Matters for Flora
Because romantic tutus rely on delicate proportions and movement, and custom fit is especially important.
A custom-made Flora costume offers:
- Precise bodice fit for comfort and security
- Balanced skirt length that flatters the dancer’s height
- Lightweight construction that allows effortless movement
- Professional finish suitable for competitions and examinations
Teachers often prefer custom-made romantic tutus for their consistent presentation and durability.
Planning Your Order Timeline
Romantic tutus are handcrafted and made to order, requiring thoughtful planning.

A Costume That Enhances Musicality and Grace
The Awakening of Flora variation rewards dancers who perform with softness, musical phrasing, and refined control. A beautifully crafted romantic tutu allows the choreography and musical interpretation to shine.
